Our Story

I'm Matthew Whitmore, the founder of PDL.Bike, and here's a bit about my journey in the bicycle industry. At 33 years old, I've dedicated nearly two decades of my life to my passion for bikes.

Early Beginnings

My love affair with bicycles started at the age of 14, when I began working at a local bike shop in Hornsby. From servicing bikes to working in sales, I immersed myself in every aspect of the business until I was 19. At 17, despite my parents' concerns about balancing my studies with my entrepreneurial ambitions, I launched my first business. I started a bicycle wholesale company, Cycle The Net Imports (CTN Imports), importing Leaf Cycles from Germany. With the support of my school, friends, and family, my first container of dirt jump bicycles marked the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey.

Building a Business

From 2008 onwards, CTN Imports grew steadily, securing dealers across the country and expanding its range to include Kartel components, Elka suspension, White Brothers suspension, and Diverse titanium springs. Despite running my own business, I sought to gain more industry experience, leading me to work at City Bike Depot in Sydney. My time there was invaluable, as I honed my skills in sales, bike fitting, and servicing, and built lasting relationships within the industry. I also had the opportunity to do marketing for Cycling Sports Group, the distributor of Cannondale and GT Bikes.

Expanding Horizons

My journey continued as I joined Bianchi Australia (SOLA Sport) as a national retail manager. Balancing this role while running CTN Imports, I expanded my expertise in the bicycle market. Later, I ventured into the bike rental sector, partnering with a colleague to grow a business from two sites to 13 across Australia. In 2019, I took the leap to expand globally, moving to New York City and growing the bike rental business to 46 cities worldwide.

Adapting and Innovating

When COVID-19 hit, the bike rental business suffered a major setback, prompting me to adapt quickly. Leveraging my extensive knowledge of the industry, I founded PDL.Bike. The goal was simple: to bring the high-quality service of a local bike shop online, catering to the needs of cycling enthusiasts during a time when travel and in-store visits were limited.

CTN Imports and Chapter 2 Bikes

In 2021, CTN Imports took a significant step forward by taking over the distribution of Chapter2 bikes in New Zealand. To this day, CTN Imports, remains the exclusive distributor of Chapter 2 bikes. This division focuses on wholesale, ensuring a robust product range for premium bike stores, while maintaining our commitment to quality and service.
